Dear Colleagues and Friends,
On behalf of the Specialist Group on Tastes, Odours, and Algal Toxins (TOA) in Drinking Water Sources and Aquaculture of the International Water Association (IWA) and the host institute, the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (RCEES, CAS), it is our great pleasure to invite you to the 12th IWA Symposium on Tastes, Odours, and Algal Toxins in Drinking Water Sources and Aquaculture, to be held in Shanghai, China, from August 29 to September 1, 2025.
The IWA TOA Specialist Group is committed to advancing research and practical solutions for managing water quality challenges related to taste, odour, and algal toxins—critical concerns for both drinking water safety and aquaculture sustainability. This symposium will convene leading experts from academia, industry, and government to explore cutting-edge developments in sensory evaluation, detection techniques, generation mechanisms, and control strategies for these pressing issues.
Key themes of the symposium include:
· Environmental management and protection of drinking water sources
· Spatial and temporal distribution and habitat characteristics of harmful algae
· Separation, cultivation, and physiological characteristics of harmful algae
· Early warning systems and in-situ control of harmful algae
· Identification and sensing of taste, odour, and algal toxins in water
· Impact of these compounds on aquatic product quality and control measures
· Technologies for the removal of taste, odour, and algal toxins
· Emerging frontiers and new technologies for drinking water safety
· Innovative approaches to improving water quality in aquaculture
The IWA-TOA Specialist Group has a long-standing tradition of fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange through its biennial symposia. The RCEES, CAS, with its strong research foundation in taste and odour issues in drinking water, will proudly serve as the host institution for the 12th edition. The symposium will be co-hosted by Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology, Zhejiang University, and the National Engineering Research Center of Urban Water Resources (South), with organizational support from the Shanghai Water Purification Technology Periodical Press. The event will be jointly led by Prof. Min Yang of RCEES and Prof. Tsair-Fuh Lin, Chair of the TOA Specialist Group.
The program will include keynote speeches, invited talks, oral and poster presentations, workshops, and a technical tour of Shanghai’s largest reservoir—offering participants a valuable opportunity to engage with global experts and witness real-world applications.
We warmly invite researchers, engineers, policymakers, and industry professionals to join us in Shanghai—a vibrant global metropolis—to share insights, address challenges, and collaborate on innovative solutions for safer and more sustainable water resources.
Mark your calendars and be part of this important event!
We look forward to welcoming you to Shanghai!
Best regards,
Min Yang Tsair-Fuh Lin
